Museum flags historic donation[From ABCNews]
The Tasmanian Museum has been given a 19th century Hawaiian flag, with a special link to the state.
Research into the flag's history has revealed a connection to Lady Jane Franklin, the wife of Sir John Franklin, who was the Lieutenant-Governor of Van Dieman's Land between 1836 and 1843.
It is believed Lady Franklin received the delicate silk flag as a gift from Hawaii's Queen Emma, who stayed with Lady Franklin in England in 1865.
Curator Ian Terry says the flag was donated to the museum last month, by a man living in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales.
"He said it was a flag that had been given to Jane Franklin back in the 1860s, so it wasn't given to her while she was here in Van Dieman's Land, as Tasmania was known at the time," he said.
"It was given to her about 20 years later when she spent a great deal of her later life, and she was about 70 at this time, travelling the world into some quite remote places."
