Fire crews retreat from York Town blaze[From ABCNews]

Emergency service crews have had had to pull back from a bushfire that is burning out of control in northern Tasmania.

Extra bulldozers and a third helicopter have been deployed to fight the blaze that has jumped control lines in York Town.

The fire has now burnt about 500 hectares and smoke has spread as far as Launceston.

Forestry Tasmania incident controller Bob Hamilton is hoping for improved weather conditions.

"At the moment the fire has flared up and has become quite intense in places and we've had to pull back, take dozers back out to safe spots and things like that," he said.

"We'll probably have to wait until conditions die down a little bit this evening before we can get back in and really get back in to fighting it."

There is currently no threat to private property but the Tasmania Fire Service says the threat may return.

Mr Hamilton says residents should check their bushfire plans.

"It's starting to play up a little bit this afternoon as the winds increase, it is spotting at the moment and the crews are having a little bit of a battle to contain it," he said.

"Things are getting a little bit more difficult out on the ground at the moment."
